IoT Workshop in Kisumu: 30 Farmers Trained

On July 18, 2025, CDTD Kenya successfully conducted an intensive IoT training workshop in Kisumu, bringing together 30 smallholder farmers from the local community. The workshop focused on introducing modern agricultural technologies that can significantly improve farming practices and increase crop yields while conserving resources.

Key Training Components:

• Soil Moisture Sensors: Farmers learned how to install and interpret data from soil moisture sensors to optimize irrigation schedules.
• Automated Irrigation Systems: Hands-on training on setting up automated watering systems that respond to soil conditions.
• Data Dashboards: Introduction to mobile applications and web dashboards for monitoring farm conditions remotely.
• Weather Monitoring: Understanding how weather data can inform planting and harvesting decisions.

Impact and Outcomes

The workshop was a resounding success, with farmers expressing enthusiasm about applying these new technologies to their farms. Key outcomes include:

• 100% of participants gained practical skills in IoT device installation and maintenance
• 25 farmers have committed to implementing soil monitoring systems on their farms
• 5 demonstration sites established for ongoing community learning
• Average expected water savings of 30-40% through optimized irrigation
